COILS SPECIAL APPLICATIONS, also known as SIMULATION, is the new COILS SUITE module dedicated to the simulation of COILS which are in series air side, and in parallel on fluid side. The special feature of this module is the possibility to simulate different coils fed by different fluids, where the air temperature coming out of one coil automatically becomes the inlet of the other.
LT-HT
The 1st module is LT-HT which is able to calculate 2 HEATING or COOLING coils in series on air side & in parallel (fed by different fluids) on fluid side.
This application consists of two coils heat exchangers (In 98% of cases LT-HT is made with two coils, although the program can handle virtually more than two) heating coils, or cooling coils, which are in series on the air side, i.e., with air flowing through both, and in parallel on the fluid side, i.e., fed singly, for example, with one coil fed with water and another with a mixture of water and glycol. The module allows, by giving the inlet and airflow conditions, to take the temperature coming out of the first coil, making it become the inlet temperature in the second. This allows many possibilities: you can perform calculation of dehumidifiers (both cold and hot fluids in the same equipment), each coil can have different geometry, and different fin spacings, one per coil (in blast
freezers for example).
FREECOOLING: HEATING COIL + CONDENSER
The second special application is the FREECOOLING module. In this case, COILS can simulate two scenarios of coils in series air side. A Heating Coil + a Condenser, as generally seen in air water chiller applications, and a Cooling Coil + a Condenser. Both are in parallel fluid side, so they can be fed by different fluids.
If external air temperature on coil is sufficiently Iow (say 5° C), with water entering the heating coil at 20°C, the cool air makes the water cool down at 15°C, which in turn goes to the evaporator, PHE as in the images, or a Shell & tube for bigger capacities. So we use
cool air to cool down the water.
Attention: this simulation module considers only the 2 coils, and not the remaining
components of the refrigerant cycle. For the full refrigerant cycle with free
cooling coils, you con consider the software SHARK & have a look at our dedicated
module for air water Chillers!
FREECOOLING: COOLING COIL + CONDENSER
In this case, COILS can simulate two coils in series, made of a Cooling Coil plus a
Condenser. The purpose is reaching lower condensing Temperature, so the cooling
coil provides lower temperature at the condenser in order to reach lower condensing
temperature. In this example, air enters the cooling coil at 35°C and 50% RH, while water gets from 7 to 12 °C. Air entering the cooling coil gets cooled down at 27°C and enters the condensing coil, allowing a lower condensing Temperature. This module allows, by giving the inlet and airflow conditions, to take the temperature coming out of the Cooling coil, making it become the inlet temperature in the Condenser, showing a lower condensing temperature as result.
