Just what you need, to simulate Air to Water HEAT PUMPS

Unilab has developed a simulation & selection tool dedicated to small to medium sized or industrial AIR to WATER Heat Pump manufacturers. A tool aimed at speeding up heat pump sizing and component selection, and calculating energy indexes, greatly facilitating the designer’s work, Unilab HEAT PUMPS is Unilab’s simulation software package dedicated to Air-Water Heat Pump manufacturers, for air conditioning and domestic hot water applications.  The design of a Heat Pump can no longer be done by simply selecting components and calculating at a single point. The technical dept. has to work according to Energy Efficiency indexes. You need an integrated software, which calculates the performance of the units according to the reference regulations, because success in sales comes from the energy efficiency levels and the regulatory fitting according to te markets where the company has to sell.



Unilab HEAT PUMPS has a standard execution for the technical office. A wizard
procedure allows you, just like an engineering office would do, to choose the capacity
range of your heat pump, so to choose whether to set up a design for a small or a big heat
pump: what changes between small or big size is the compressor capacity reference point.
The software will automatically filter all the compressors that give a certain
maximum amount of kW (e.g., maximum 15 kW) at a certain capacity reference point
(e.g., Evaporating Temperature 15°C Condensing Temperature 65 °C, with the possibility of
changing the reference point or enter new reference points). You can choose the typology
of unit (Air-Water), choose the refrigerant (an additional criteria to filter the compressors
available in the archive), filter the compressor models according to the capacity required,
and the typology of components is already preset according to whether the heat pump
is small or large, guiding the user in the design (i.e. PHE and Scroll compressors for small
heat pumps, Screw compressor for bigger units).

FILTER COMPRESSORS according to the precise TOTAL CAPACITY you want to achieve!

After choosing whether a heat pump you want to design is small (within 15kw) or large (over 15kw), the software automatically filters out all compressors that give a certain total capacity at a certain capacity reference point, (e.g. Evaporating T 15°C, Condensing T 65°C). Now you can further filter the compressor based on the exact total capacity you want. Need to design a 6kw heat pump? The software filters all compressors that give 6kW total capacity!

INVERTER COMPRESSORS are available, Simulate with one compressor on and one off, and change the compressor staging!

the WHOLE UNIT, and calibration is at multiple levels, allowing to fine-tune your components & also the whole unit! You can even create Excel performance tables, of a single unit and an entire range! The software also lets you partialize scroll & screw compressors. It is possible to add up to 20 levels of partialization specifying for each level the performance of the inverter compressor, ticking the square on/off (for on/off compressors), or using the scrollbar to change the percentage (for inverter compressors).

The archive for each component is huge, and divided in Standard & Customer
The standard is updated regularly by unilab with the main models from manufacturers like
Copeland or Bitzer for Compressors, Alfa Laval or Swep for brazed plate PHEs, just to name
a few. The customer archive allows you to independently insert components. And Unilab
can configure the archive to be shared within your office, so if you insert a new component,
also your colleagues will be able to see and use it immediately (requires SQL Server).


After choosing the component models from the drop-down menus, the user proceeds to insert the input conditions for the calculation. At the core of the software, as always, our state-of-the-art calculation engine, allowing the user to calculate at any conditions (ex. To check if your unit works with Dubai conditions: 48°C/55%) & warn the user of out of compressor limits situations! It is also possible to edit at the moment in the project the data of coils’ tubes and fins (e.g. change them on the go to copper copper instead of aluminum if the heat pump is located near the sea, to avoid coil corrosion). It is possible to calculate the fan by keeping the flow rate fixed or setting the flow rate so as to find RPM. After inputing the calculation conditions such as outdoor air temperature and thermal difference, clicking on calculate, the software will quickly identify the balance point of the system and provide detailed information about each component’s performance, with the representation of the PH diagram and compressor’s operating limit polygon.

All our software use the latest REFPROP library of NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology). This library comprises the thermodynamic and thermophysical properties of more than 300 liquids & gases, and 12 mixtures of liquids, including the newest and the most used refrigerants. And we update it constantly, ensuring that you are always up-to-date with the market.

A new Excel table calculation – MORE FLEXIBLE THAN EVER

We have improved our Excel Capacity Tables, and now they are more flexible than ever!
User defines the data range to calculate, and the program calculates all the combinations
of outside air temperatures and water thermal differences. By selecting the bullet points on the right of the screen you can include in the table any data calculated by the software, for maximum flexibility. This means you can build your custom excel table the way you want, with the data you need, according to your needs, in complete autonomy, even creating complex tables in a few click. It is also possible to introduce fix data, such as the name of the unit, cost, dimensions. Also, by clicking on one of the cells in the Excel table, the software will display on the right the full calculation corresponding to that cell, populating all the data in the colored column.



ECO DESIGN SCOP index (according to EN 14825:2018)

The software allows calculating EcoDesign energy index, according to EN 14825:2018,
and for the SCOP index to print the Energy Label. Just what you need.


Understanding the buyer’s annual savings by using your heat pump is a key to sell it. With this tool, you can quickly simulate how your heat pump behaves at a certain temperature, and identify how much in a year it consumes in a given city.

In the Control section, the user adds various stages by indicating, for example, that in stage A a compressor is on or off. Then, he indicates how the compressor will modulate, from a minimum to a maximum, and the software will display the partialization of the unit accordingly. Several stages can be added so as to create all the partialization logic for the unit that will be used in the energy Simulation. After that, the user defines a requested load, uploads an Excel file with the thermal profile of a city (ambient temperature + annual hours when a temperature occurs), and launches the calculation!
