NEW CASCADE EVAPORATOR/CONDENSER 

Our advanced Plate & Shell software now empowers engineers to design, rate, and select cascade evaporator-condensers with precision and efficiency. Unilab has introduced the innovative Cascade Mode in our UniSuite PLATE & SHELL, and UniSuite SHELL software. This feature enables a fluid to condense on one side of the heat exchanger while simultaneously evaporating on the other side. Typically, as an example, this involves ammonia evaporating and CO2 condensing within the same heat exchanger, significantly enhancing thermal efficiency and process performance. It is possible to calculate evaporation on shell side with a condensing plate side, but also condensing shell side with evaporation plate side.

DISCOVER PLATE & SHELL

UNILAB UNISUITE PLATE & SHELL is Unilab software dedicated to Plate & Shell, also known as Disk & Shell heat exchangers. PLATE & SHELL allows you a calculation in 9 different calculation modalities: Fluid-fluid, Direct Expansion Inside plate, Flooded Evaporator Outside Plate, Condensing Inside plate, Condensing Outside Plate, Steam Inside & Steam Outside Plate & the new CASCADE mode!

Plate & Shell is part of UniSuite, Unilab’s smart platform and unique tool the for design, selection and rating of PLATE & SHELL, PHE, SHELL, TUBE-IN-TUBE, COAXIAL heat exchangers.

All UniSuite software use the library REFPROP of NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology). It comprises the thermodynamic and thermophysical properties of more than 300 liquids & gases (which can be further extended by the user in autonomy), an extensive archive of OILS and 12 mixtures of liquids, along with the newest refrigerants. We have extended this library to include more than 200 liquid foods and beverages. Each software integrates correction factors, which lets the user to align results with the experimental data. 

RATING

In RATING mode, the user has all constructive parameters of the heat exchanger and the thermodynamics data, and wants to determine the heat transfer rate. The rating holds fix the thermodynamic data of fluid flow, inlet and outlet temperatures input by the user, to obtain the heat balance. It is also possible to input the required capacity, flow rate and inlet temperature to obtain the outlet temperature, which will then remain fixed.

The software will calculate what the exchange coefficient should be in order to have the capacity required by the user, giving the fouling factors as results, which are then transformed into the overall heat transfer coefficient, and consequently the software will show the oversurfacing on the Overall heat transfer coefficient. As output, the software provides duty requirements, thermophysical properties including viscosity at the wall, kW required, heat flux (capacity divided by exchange surface, which is important especially in condensers and evaporators since the heat transfer coefficient depends on it), mean temperature difference, overall heat transfer coefficient, and output fouling factors with heat transfer coefficient oversizing.

Performance

PERFORMANCE

In PERFORMANCE mode, the Capacity input disappears, and the software calculates the maximum capacity. The Oversurfacing becomes an input, so if the user calculates the project with an oversurfacing equal to “0”, the software will give as output the maximum capacity the exchanger can achieve.

DESIGN

In DESIGN mode, the user selects one or more geometries from a list, inputs the desired capacity and the thermal data, and as result obtains a list of heat exchangers, built on geometries loaded in the archive, that satisfy (in terms of the margin used) the required capacity. The software gives as an output the capacity, margin (the relative difference in % between the calculated and requested capacity), the number of plates of the heat exchanger, operating temperatures and pressure drops. Only in the case of fluid-fluid calculation, we divide the design mode into rating & performance.

DISCOVER PLATE & SHELL

PLATE & SHELL allows you to insert new plates for different calculation modes, calibrate them, and access and tweak factors and data directly from the project, without having to exit the project and go to the archive.

The Archive Management allows the user to:

  • add new materials by inserting code, thermal conductivity and Density,
  • add new connections by inserting internal+external diameters and the pressure,
  • inserting new plates, enabling them per single mode (fluid-fluid, direct expansion, steam or condensing), and tweaking their factors to calibrate with your test data.
  • edit or add new plate thicknesses
  • associate plates with connections
  • As usual, like all Unisuite modules, the fluid management allows the user to insert a new fluid, or test a fluid.

The software gives the ability to manage plate mixing, with the possibility of having symmetrical or asymmetrical mixing.

Furthermore, PLATE & SHELL can generate an exportable parametrically editable 3D drawing of the heat exchanger!
