Little things each of us can do to help the environment: tips and advice
In a consumer society whose appetite to consume seems limitless, are there any precautions we can take to help the environment and protect ourselves from the damage that progress, technology and over-population are causing? Here are a few useful strategies to put into practice day by day: practical tips to help protect the environment from the thoughtless actions of human beings.
- Adjust our daily routine
Anyone wishing to safeguard the environment could start by changing their own daily routine, turning lights and other power-consuming appliances off when not required, un-plugging devices when not in use, cutting down on our use of air-conditioning or heating and following recycling rules.
- Making changes to eating habits
Making changes to our eating habits can also help improve the current situation, for example: reducing our purchases of meat and dairy products (the production of which involves a high intensity of resource use), avoiding drinks with plastic or paper packaging, choosing locally produced products and re-using water bottles.
- Changing our transport habits
We should also include changes in transport use among steps we can take to help the environment such as: using a bike instead of motorized vehicles, organizing car-pooling with colleagues for the daily commute to our workplace, opting for the bus instead of the car, purchasing hybrid vehicles and reducing our fuel consumption.
- Modifying our home
In order to become more environmentally-friendly we must also consider the domestic sphere and take steps such as:Â blocking drafts, insulating walls, checking for water leaks, choosing more energy-efficient domestic appliances, embracing solar energy and buying LED light bulbs.
- Adapt the layout of the garden
Tips for protecting the environment also include the garden such as:Â creating a vegetable patch, avoiding the use of pesticides and other chemical products, planting trees, using a compost heap and reducing lawn areas to a minimum (because they require a higher level of maintenance).
- Re-thinking the way we shop
Caring about our planet’s wellbeing also means taking a step back from consumerism with the following measures: restoring old furniture and re-using it, buying clothes second-hand, giving away items we no longer need and using recyclable shopping bags.
These are our tops for safeguarding our environment; valuable advice to be put into practice each day in order to protect ourselves and planet earth.
