Digital First: how to build the digital foundations of the future
The concept of digital first may be described as a strategy designed to improve one’s business. Digital is now present in every sector and dictates the new rules for all markets. Any company wishing to stay up to date cannot afford not to embrace the current changes.
In order to deal with this new type of competition, it is essential to realise in which direction the company should be taken. The best route will be closely linked with the introduction of rapid communication systems which can be used by anyone from any location, improved online interaction capability and the versatility of products and services offered.
Applying a digital strategy
Restructuring a business according to the principles of digital first is not always an easy or quick process. Each entrepreneur wishing to take his company down this route must analyse the situation in order to understand in what ways digital can really improve his business and identify the steps required to obtain his established objectives.
In some companies, just a few changes are needed, while others require a complete restructure. The important thing is that when applying the digital strategy, managers must not be afraid to take risks or to completely overhaul their existing business concept.
There are four main areas of a company where a digital approach can considerably improve the quality of the business:
- Business processes are digitalised in order to improve efficiency when supplying services. In this case, the entrepreneur must realise which processes must be transposed into digital, so as to make them quicker, more efficient, quantifiable and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week;
- With digital, contact time between clients and the business has evolved. Users have constant interaction with the brand (such as when visiting the web portal, receiving technical assistance, sharing a tweet or when they must interact with software). Each of these moments becomes a form of marketing, according to the client’s experience and level of satisfaction. Recognising their value and working to optimise them is a precious incentive for the business;
- The evolution of business models has become much wider thanks to digital. Today, a business is able to branch out into sectors which are not closely related. Posing the question of how a business can expand is part of the digital strategy and can lead to many interesting opportunities;
- Changing products so that they can exploit the potential of digital better is an excellent way to embrace the new business concept. The Internet of Things, sensors, applications and new functionalities can all be integrated inside everyday products, in order to transform even the simplest object into a precious source of data.
Adopting a digital strategy has become almost obligatory, especially if a company wants to make inroads into an increasingly competitive and complex market. The concept of company digitalisation should become a kind of mantra for entrepreneurs who are aware of the current changes. Only in this way will it be possible for them to enable their business to reach its full potential.
It makes no difference which sector the business in question operates, as every sector can achieve enormous benefits from a carefully implemented digital approach. Regardless of whether the business supplies a service, reports news or sells a product, digital first is an efficient strategy which can really make a difference.
