Is it better to be a lone worker or part of a team? Work and winning strategies
Should I work as part of a team or as a lone worker? In the last few years in particular, this has become the dilemma. The debate regarding working as part of a group versus working alone is still ongoing, but what is the best solution for professionals in today’s society? Let’s find out together, as we explore the advantages and disadvantages posed by these two very different options step by step.
Pros and cons of working alone
Seeing as we are discussing the pros and cons of working in a group or as a lone worker, let’s begin with the latter: what is involved in the management of an independent business? If on the one hand you can decide the days and hours you want to work, the locations (from home, co-working, public place etc.) and the salary to award yourself, on the other hand we must consider that you have to bear the entire responsibility for all projects underway. Furthermore, we must take into account that being a lone worker means not having opportunities for interaction with others and having to take complete charge of all tasks to be undertaken.
Pros and cons of working in a group
Continuing on the theme of working in a team or alone, what does a person choosing to work as part of a group have to deal with? As far as the advantages are concerned, as a member of a group, a worker can: share tasks to be done, give and receive support, learn new ideas, exchange skills, increase productivity and stimulate their sense of sharing rather than a sense of self-importance. On the other hand, however, that same person might also find themselves: arguing with others due to differences of opinion, agreeing to work unsocial hours and feeling like they are in constant competition.
As is apparent from what we have already mentioned, the dilemma between whether to work as a group or work alone does not necessarily have a clear winner. This is due to the simple fact that both options have some positive and other less positive aspects to be taken into account.
The only solution before deciding which path to take, is to consider which option best suits our personality type: if we have a more outgoing character, and we are helpful and cooperative, it is better to choose group work; if however we tend to be shy, introverted and quiet it is better to opt for working alone.
