Wi-fi: how to protect the company network
A serious fault was recently discovered in the cryptographic protocol WPA2, which has put at risk data transmitted via Wi-fi and the devices connected to it: a problem affecting both domestic and business networks and first identified by a group of academics at KU Leuven University.
According to expert opinion, when a connection is established, the bug allows hackers to access sensitive information (such as passwords, credit card numbers etc.) and to spread malware capable of compromising devices connected to the network.
Considering however that any attack via Wi-fi must be mounted inside a given network and that the information transmitted on the internet by users is often encrypted, the criminals may not necessarily be able to decipher any information that they have covertly acquired.
Despite this, the situation gives considerable cause for concern, because in relation to domestic connections there may not be much significant data to steal, but if we consider business connections the issue is very different.
Anyone wishing to protect themselves could, first of all, choose a secure ISP service which is capable of guaranteeing a long-term connection (before choosing a provider it is advisable to research all available options in the area).
The next step is to identify a suitable Internet package for their needs, allowing a significant amount of traffic and able to manage multiple connections (a good compromise is provided by unlimited band packages).
The choice of router also carries some importance, especially if we consider the wide range of solutions currently on the market. In order to avoid unpleasant surprises, it is advisable to choose hardware produced by well-known manufacturers and designed to ensure all company data is protected.
The password is also fundamental when aiming to install a reliable wi-fi connection: in order to reduce the risks of attack or hacking it is essential to create a strong code before allowing employees to access the network.
In order to devise an efficient password, it is important to use as many characters as possible and include special symbols, numbers, upper and lower case letters etc. It is advisable to save the chosen code and keep it well-hidden.
In addition to these measures, it is also useful to consider de-activating the WPS (Wi-fi Protected Setup), which is generally used to simplify the configuration of the connection, but in reality provides an entry point for any hacker.
Before proceeding down that path, it is essential to check if the WPS is currently active or inactive and to find this out, it is sufficient to take a look at the router or its packaging (if you do not expect to ever use it, it can be dis-activated immediately).
In case of doubts regarding the state of the WPS, it is also possible to carry out a check by accessing the router settings. In many cases these can be found by entering the following numbers into the URL taskbar: 193.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 (the address differs according to the ISP and its manufacturer) and then managing the router via the Control Panel.
Wi-fi network security is of paramount importance, especially when it a company network is involved. By protecting it, you are protecting your business and everything connected to it (sensitive data, confidential information etc.)
Of course, the tips mentioned above will not eliminate the risks completely, but at least they will help provide a solid defence against attacks by professional and other hackers: individuals who must be blocked in any way possible in order to safeguard the security of your business.
