CO2 Calculation – Coils Vs Transcritical Gas Cooler
COILS and TRANSCRITICAL GAS COOLER both have CO2, yet they perform a different kind of calculation. Is it only a matter of subcritical vs transcritical? Let’s find out!
Unilab COILS, our world-renowned software for finned pack heat exchangers, includes in its huge fluids library the CO2 gas. Transcritical Gas Cooler is the best software ever for the calculation of CO2 Gas Coolers. Since its launch, Gas Cooler has grown rapidly as one of the most successful Unilab tools, allowing our users to launch their Gas Cooler portfolios in no time!
The core engine of Gas Cooler is based on our Coils core engine, thus being the most accurate and reliable on the market, yet the calculation is performed in a very different way in the two software.
Gas Coolers are basically finned pack heat exchangers, but inside the tubes we have CO2, so how can the TRANSCRITICAL GAS COOLER calculation be different from COILS? Let’s clarify how the two software work!
Unilab COILS includes the CO2 gas, thus making it possible to use COILS to design gas cooler with CO2, but in this case, unlike with other fluids, COILS (strange but true) would not be the most accurate solution for CO2 Gas Coolers!
In fact, during the cooling of the CO2 gas, since you are in a transcritical zone, and you have a significant thermal shift, the physical properties of the gas change a lot between the beginning and the end of the cooling.
UNILAB COILS, to carry out the thermodynamic calculation, averages the thermophysical properties between the beginning and the end of cooling.
This makes UNILAB TRANSCRITICAL GAS COOLER our most appropriate product for such exchangers! TRANSCRITICAL GAS COOLER was designed precisely to operate in transcritical areas of transformations. In fact, the software divides the exchanger into 100 pieces, and for each piece makes a thermal balance.
The result of UNILAB TRANSCRITICAL GAS COOLER will therefore be much more precise, with CO2, than UNILAB COILS!
