Heat exchanger design program: UNILAB Radiator Suite – from the Journal of the KSME 2019. 11., vol. 59, no. 11, by Young Won
Our exclusive distributor for South Korea, Mr. Young Won is a member and Director of the KSME, the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers. The Journal of the KSME collects the main articles and white papers of the members, and other articles of interest to the world of mechanical engineering. In issue 59 of November 2019, Young Won published an overview of Unilab Radiator Suite software, entitled “Heat exchanger design program: UNILAB Radiator Suite”.
Here we provide a translation. You can find the original text in Korean in the gallery at the bottom of the article.
UNILAB is an Italian Software House specialized in heat exchange, which developed the famous COILS software, a design and selection program for finned pack heat exchangers.
Since more than 30 years, Unilab provides high quality heat exchange software for the design of different heat exchangers, in HVAC and non HVAC field. UNILAB products are the result of the IT experience of the development team, combined with solid technical and engineering foundations.
Unilab standard software incorporates the latest technologies in the IT field. Unilab also provides its customers with commercial selection solutions and customized software.
UNILAB operates in the following markets: HVAC and Refrigeration, Energy & Power, Chemical/Pharmaceutical, Food & Beverage and Automotive. The sectors to which the software is addressed, are divided into seven categories: HVAC&R, Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Automotive, Food & Beverage, Petrochemical and Energy.
The product I want to present in this article is called Radiator Suite.
Radiator Suite is composed of five modules, as many as the design variants of the exchanger required by the user.
- TUBE & FIN
The name Tube and Fin derives from the fact that this exchanger is composed of two tubes and between them there is an exchange element which is either a fin or a bar. TUBE&FIN allows the calculation of combinations of monophase fluids aeriform-liquid. The designer can add materials, fin sizes, and much more.
- PLATE & FIN
The name Plate and Fin derives from the fact that this exchanger is composed of two plates and between them there is an exchange element which is either a fin or a bar. PLATE&FIN module allows the calculation of different combinations of monophase fluids: aeriform-aeriform, aeriform-liquid, liquid-liquid.
- CAC CORE ASSLY
The module CAC CORE ASSLY allows the calculation of combinations of monophase fluids: aeriform-aeriform or liquid-liquid.
- PAF3
PAF3 allows to design a combined radiator, and is a software able to manage three separate gas flows impelling on the same heat exchanger. PAF3 considers radiators that have a common frontal side, where air impacts on the radiator, which is then divided into different sections (in PAF3 you can divide it into 2, 3, 4 sections) with, for example, water and glycol flowing on one section, then oil flowing on the other, and air flowing on the third section. The program allows you to change the fluids on the different sections and also to consider different types of fins for each section!
- ALOA
ALOA, on the other hand, allows you to design radiators with a round tube configuration, using oval brass tubes (in-line or staggered) and flat copper fins (which can be louvered or dimpled).
In addition to the COILS finned pack heat exchanger design module, Unilab has developed a 3D module that allows the circuitry and creation of metal sheets for production; mCOILS, which connects production and sales departments; TRANSCRITICAL GAS COOLER, which allows the transcritical calculation of finned pack heat exchangers with CO2; FANCOIL SELECTOR for fan coils; HYBRID for Unit Coolers, Air Coolers, Dry Coolers and Remote Condensers; COLD STORAGE to calculate the capacity of a cold room; UNILAB SHARK, the technical software developed by UNILAB for the design and simulation of air/water or water/water chillers, heat pumps, air conditioners, Close Control Units, multi-function units, condensing units, evaporating units, remote condensers and any special project that includes a cooling cycle, and other programs and modules, such as ROOFTOP, that perform the simulation of rooftop units for large buildings.
The software is mainly intended for use in the design, production and development of heat exchangers, but also for Universities and research institutes.
